Mindes Dorlean

Bio: A soccer coach, fitness and soccer director since 2009, Mindes Dorlean came to Southern California nearly a decade ago. A former Haitian National Team player, Dorlean was at Carlsbad Wave, then LA Galaxy San Diego before launching his own program in the 2018/19 season under the AYSO Matrix umbrella. Built from just one team, thanks to a strong response from the community and his desire to develop college-bound players, Dorlean’s program has expanded and he is now the Club Director of Rebels Carlsbad.

Cobi Black

Position: Director of Boys Program

Bio: Cobi Black signed a professional contract with the Ontario Fury in 2020. Leading up to that he played semi-professional outdoor soccer in California, Arkansas, and Kansas. He played collegiate in Texas, Kansas, and his last college years were in Pasadena at Providence Christian College. He brings his vast knowledge of the small sided game with a national championship in futsal, and years playing professional indoor soccer.

Summer Mason

Position: Director of Rec & Director Marketing and Communications

Bio: Summer Mason brings a mix of decades of experience playing soccer at the highest levels and coaching club, high school, and privately at various levels for over 10 years. Her passion for playing soccer transferred over into an even greater passion for coaching the next generation of soccer players and athletes. Between her experience in playing soccer, personal training, nutrition, and psychology, she strives to create well rounded holistic athletes that transcends beyond the field. She believes it is important to foster an environment of open communication and critical thinking to help form independent soccer players that understand the game. It is her passion to develop confident, hard working, and passionate individuals, guiding them towards their goals through intentional training sessions, teaching the game of soccer, and instilling a deep sense of confidence and self esteem.

She holds her USSF ‘D’ License, her bachelors degree in Psychology, and certifications for nutrition and personal training. She grew up playing locally all over San Diego county, including varsity for Carlsbad HS. She played D1 collegiate soccer for University of San Diego (USD), professionally in 3 countries, and currently for the new professional MASLW Sockers.

Mario Negrete

Bio: Mario Negrete brings extensive soccer experience to our club. He played soccer for over 20 years across San Diego County, including two seasons at Palomar Community College. He has 13 years of experience coaching youth soccer with San Diego Football Club and FC Force San Diego, including a season with FC Force North County. Mario's high school coaching background spans 10 years, previously with Orange Glen Junior Varsity Boys and currently with San Pasqual Girls Junior Varsity. He also served two seasons as an Assistant Coach for UPSL Escondido FC.

Jonathan Eaton

Head Coach: BU09

Bio: Coach Jonathan brings a rare combination of global perspective, military discipline, and a lifelong passion for the game to the Rebels Carlsbad coaching staff.

Jonathan started playing when he was 3 years old. Moving around the world as a military dependent gave him the opportunity to play in multiple countries through various academies/Club systems. He returned to the United States as a teenager joining Old Dominion Soccer Club, before answering his own call to serve and join the Marine Corps.

As an active duty Marine, Jonathan spent the better part of two decades in one of the most demanding instructional environments in the world. As a certified Curriculum Developer and Instructor Trainer, he has taught high-stakes training where clarity, patience, and the ability to build genuine confidence in others are essential. That same intentional, safety-first approach is at the heart of how he coaches his players, where creating a secure, structured, and encouraging environment allows young athletes to take risks, build resilience, and fall in love with the game.

Jonathan's commitment to athletic development is equally deep. Dual-certified in high intensity athletic training and performance programming. He understands how to develop young bodies the right way, using periodized science-based methods that build cardiovascular endurance, speed, and functional movement while keeping injury prevention and age-appropriate progression at the forefront. He is also certified in sport performance and fueling systems (nutrition). Jonathan is equipped to develop well-rounded athletes who are as strong on and off the pitch.

For Jonathan coaching isn't just about teaching the game, it's about laying the foundation for confident, capable, and resilient young athletes. Jonathan holds his Grassroots Coaching License, and he is on track to complete his USSF D-License later this year. His unique background makes him not just a coach, but a mentor, one who knows firsthand what it means to build people up from the ground level, to send them forward prepared for whatever comes next.

Phil Scicluna

Head Coach: BU11

Bio: Phil Scicluna brings an extensive and multidisciplinary background to the game of soccer, with experience spanning elite play, professional coaching, program development, and national-level innovation. He has represented the United States in World Cup Footvolley League tournaments in both France and Dubai, competing on the international stage and showcasing American talent abroad.

In 2004, Phil played a pivotal role in expanding the sport by introducing beach soccer to the West Coast, helping establish a new competitive pathway that continues to influence the region today.

His coaching career includes work at the professional MASL level, collegiate coaching at UNLV, and the development of numerous championship‑winning youth teams. Phil teaches the Waza Method, a technical training philosophy created by his family. Waza means “technique,” reflecting the family’s deep roots in the sport—they founded Michigan’s first professional indoor soccer team, as well as the Hawks and Wolves youth clubs, both consistently ranked among the top 10 in the nation.

Phil’s formal training and certifications further reinforce his technical expertise and commitment to excellence:

CRIS NEGRETE

Position: Goalkeeper Coach

Bio: Cris Negrete is a seasoned goalkeeper coach with over 15 years of experience. He has dedicated his career to developing top-tier talent within CalSouth. As a key member of the Rebels Carlsbad coaching staff, Cris provides individualized instruction to every goalkeeper on each team.

His impressive playing career includes back-to-back CIF titles at Orange Glen High School and a Pacific Coast Conference championship at Palomar College. Cris also gained valuable experience at the Rancho Santa Fe Attack, contributing to their successful run to the National Cup Finals.

Shaun Paterson

Head Coach: BU15

Bio: Shaun Paterson has over 15 years of experience coaching soccer across levels from U6 to U17 in Costa Rica, Scotland, and California.

In addition to his soccer background, he brings more than 25 years of coaching experience across rugby and soccer, including collegiate roles with the University of London, New York University, and Stanford University. He also co-founded and sold a professional Scouting business focused on South American talent.

A U.S. Soccer C License holder, Shaun’s coaching is built around a game-based approach, where players learn through realistic situations that reflect the demands of the game. Sessions are designed to challenge how players perceive situations, make decisions, and execute under pressure.

His focus is on helping players experience what high-performing teams look like, develop a clear understanding of what real improvement requires, and deepen their relationship with the game.

He lives in California with his family, where he is raising three boys and has founded and operated multiple businesses.

Tamina Madsen

Position: Event Planner

Bio: Tamina Madsen is the Event Planner for Rebels Carlsbad, where she manages the club's events and fundraising efforts. Tamina is responsible for managing Rebels Carlsbad's club events, fundraisers with local businesses, and all responsibilities associated with event planning and hosting.

As the Community Director at Hera Hub Carlsbad, Tamina brings a deep understanding of building and nurturing vibrant communities to her role with Rebels. She is passionate about connecting with people and fostering a sense of belonging, and she leverages her experience to create engaging content that resonate with and highlights our Rebels players and families. A Southern California native, Tamina relocated to Carlsbad in 2017 and has a strong connection to the local community.

sean carr

Position: Team Management Coordinator

Bio: Sean Carr is the Team Management Coordinator for Rebels Carlsbad. He serves as a mentor to our team managers and oversees the logistical coordination of team activities, including practices, games, tournaments, and events. With an eye for detail and a strong organizational mindset, Sean acts as the primary point of contact for our team managers to help ensure that coaches, parents, and players are well-informed about schedules, team updates, and club events. Effectively helping the teams stay focused on what matters most—playing soccer.

Sean brings a wealth of experience to the club. As a Lead Cytogenetic Technologist, he has a background in team coordination, training, and building a positive cultural environment which makes him a key asset to our Rebels Carlsbad soccer community. He is deeply committed to helping our community create a welcoming environment that emphasizes teamwork, sportsmanship, and the holistic development of each player. Sean has a 2014 son and a 2013 daughter who play for Rebels Carlsbad.
